# Install and sign in

Add the Sylvera tab to Excel and connect it to your Sylvera account

Installing takes about five minutes and doesn't need administrator rights. The add-in is installed for your user account only.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Rolling out to a team?** Your IT team can deploy the add-in to everyone at once through the Microsoft 365 admin center, so it appears in Excel without each person running an installer. Contact your Customer Success Manager for the deployment details.
{% endhint %}

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Windows" %}
Requires Windows 10 or 11.

1. **Download the installer:** [install-sylvera-windows.zip](https://excel.prod.sylvera.com/install-sylvera-windows.zip). If your browser warns that the file isn't commonly downloaded, choose **Keep**.
2. **Extract it.** Right-click the zip file and choose **Extract All…**. The new folder holds **Install Sylvera** and a supporting PowerShell script.
3. **Run Install Sylvera.** Windows warns that the publisher couldn't be verified, because the installer isn't code-signed yet. Select **Run**.
4. **Wait for "Installed."** A command window confirms the install. Close it.
5. **Open Excel.** If the **Sylvera** tab doesn't appear, go to **Home → Add-ins → Developer Add-ins** and select **Sylvera Add-in**.

A [printable Windows setup guide](https://excel.prod.sylvera.com/setup-guide-windows.pdf) with screenshots is also available.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Mac" %}

1. **Quit Excel** completely with ⌘Q. The installer can't add the tab while Excel is open.
2. **Download the installer:** [install-sylvera-mac.command](https://excel.prod.sylvera.com/install-sylvera-mac.command).
3. **Run it.** Double-click the file. The first time, macOS blocks it because it isn't notarized yet. Go to **System Settings → Privacy & Security**, select **Open Anyway**, then open the file again.
4. **Wait for "Installed."** A Terminal window confirms the install and lists the next steps. Close it.
5. **Open Excel.** The **Sylvera** tab appears in the ribbon.
   {% endtab %}
   {% endtabs %}

## Sign in

1. On the **Sylvera** tab, select **Account**. The Sylvera pane opens on the right.
2. Select **Sign in with Sylvera**.
3. Enter the email and password you use for the Sylvera platform.

The pane shows your email once you're connected. Your sign-in is saved on this device only. It's never written to a workbook, so sharing a file never shares your access.

To sign out, select **Account**, then **Sign out**. Do this on a shared computer.

## Check it works

On the **Sylvera** tab, select **Examples**. The add-in creates six example sheets filled with real project data. If the values fill in, you're ready to go.

## For your IT team

* **What it installs:** a ribbon tab in Excel for the current user. No administrator rights are needed.
* **What it connects to:** Sylvera (sylvera.com) and Microsoft's Office services, over HTTPS only.
* **What it stores:** each person's Sylvera sign-in, on their own device. Nothing is stored in workbooks, and the add-in doesn't read or send anything else on the machine.
* **Why it shows a security warning:** the installers aren't code-signed or notarized yet. A signed release is on our roadmap. If your organization blocks unsigned installers, you may need to allow this one.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.sylvera.com/excel-add-in/install-and-sign-in.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
